Panel - Scientific Careers in Academia and Beyond

Goran Rakočević is a Bioinformatics Scientist at Seven Bridges Genomics. His primary field of work is Graph Genomics, and its application to analyze Whole Genome Sequencing data. He is one of the developers of the Seven Bridges Graph Genome suite, a cutting-edge tool, which builds a graph structure containing the genetic variation within the population, and uses it to generate highly accurate variant calls. Prior to joining Seven Bridges, he was employed at the Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and has collaborated on research projects at the University of Belgrade. He obtained his PhD from University of Belgrade, School of Electrical Engineering, majoring in Distributed Machine Learning and High Performance Computing.

Given the diversity of participants and speakers that will meet at Petnica Science Center, we have a unique opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas related to scientific life. To tackle specifically questions about the variety of possible scientific career paths we invited three more guests beside our keynote speakers. Read more about our special guests below and prepare your questions to make the debate as useful to your dilemmas as possible!

Miloš Božović is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Belgrade and an External Lecturer at European Business School in Germany. He obtained his PhD in Economics in 2009 at Barcelona Graduate School of Economics. He also holds a PhD in physics from University of Belgrade. His research interests cover a range of topics in banking and finance, with a focus on risk modelling, stochastic processes and continuous-time asset pricing. In parallel with his academic career, he worked as a consultant on a number of projects in Europe and the Middle East. He is a co-founder and President of the Board of CIF, a Belgrade-based company that specialized in development of commercial software solutions for risk management.

Tanja Adnađević is Head of Department of program activity in Center for the promotion of science and Research associate at the Institute for biological research “Siniša Stanković”, University of Belgrade. She started her career as a researcher in the Department of the genetic research, studying population genomics of yellow-necked mice and B chromosomes. During PhD studies she realized how important science promotion is participating in several projects, now she is a coordinator of the Horizon2020 Researcher’s Night project “ReFocuS”. Being so involved in science promotion, last year she made a step outside academia into something different but familiar. She started working in the Center for the promotion of science as a part of the group in charge of bringing science closer to the population, in order to stimulate curiosity and creativity and inspire young people for a future career in science.
